12 Metre Yacht Club Marstrand Station

The 12 Metre Yacht Club was founded by Jan Slee in 2006, dedicated to the promotion and betterment of the 12 Metre Class. The idea to ”commission” further stations came quite early and such stations were created in 2008 in New York City, Kiel, Flensburg and Copenhagen.

The brilliant idea to launch a 12 Metre Yacht Club Marstrand Station came up in 2010. A number of 12-metre sailors, having been actively taking part in America’s Cup challenges with 12-metres, then met in Newport, US, during the event ”Return of the Legends”. Among the Swedish participants were Pelle Pettersson and Lars Unger. The inspiring idea was brought back across the Atlantic home to Sweden. And at a meeting in Gothenburg February 8 2011 the 12 Metre Yacht Club Marstrand Station was solemnly ”commissioned” by Jan Slee. With the mission: ”…to promote 12 Metre sailing in Marstrand and when possible arrange for 12 Metre racing…” Pelle Petterson was appointed ”Station Steward”.

The time has now come for revitalization of the 12 Metre Yacht Club Marstrand Station as well. Göteborgs Seglarklubbs (GSK), arranging Marstrand 12 Metre Cup 2022, has taken leadership. A number of the members of GSK were active during the Swedish challenges of Americas Cup in 1977 and 1980 with the 12-metre S-3 ”Sverige”, designed and helmed by Pelle Petterson. And today the beautiful vintage 12-Metre US-14 ”Northern Light”, launched 1938 and designed by Olin Stephens, is owned and sailed by two members of GSK (Numbers 46 and 57).

To GSK, arranging the 12mR European Championship in 2019 together with Skagen in Denmark, this engagement in the 12 Metre Yacht Club Marstrand Station means that the Club’s affiliation to Marstrand and dedication to the 12-metre class is further strengthened.
